E. Mervyn Taylor
Ernest Mervyn Taylor (1906 - 1964) known as E. Mervyn Taylor was a notable New Zealand engraver, printmaker, artist and publisher. As an artist and designer his work made a significant contribution to the emergence of a distinctly New Zealand language of art and design. He was one of the most celebrated New Zealand artists of the postwar period (1930s-1960s) and is remembered fondly by many New Zealanders for his wood-engravings in the New Zealand School Journal.
His skill at engraving was born out of his history as a jewellery engraver, where he became an expert at transforming simple lines into expressive masterpieces, creating tremendous energy and depth within the 2-D area. His skill and contribution to the art world placed Taylor in a generation that understood the need to cast off colonialism and discover from within New Zealand a way to see the world and interpret its character from a South Pacific perspective.
When Mervyn’s granddaughter, Sarah, contacted us about doing a range of cards from his artwork, we jumped at the opportunity. We have 8 designs we think you will love.
Each card is printed in New Zealand on WMF certified board and supplied with an envelope. Blank inside for your personal message.
*What’s lovely about this particular photo is that it shows him printing one of the designs used in this range of cards (Terns)
